Your card is good at all members of Berks County Public Libraries. The library catalog is a shared resource among the 23 public libraries, Reading Area Community College, and the Council of Chemical Abuse.
Cards are issued free of charge to any resident of Berks County. Adult cards are issued to persons 18 years of age or older. Patrons must show proof of address and a photo ID to obtain a library card. Acceptable forms of ID include driver's license, auto registration, recent utility bills, etc. Juvenile cards are issued to children 17 years of age or younger and require a parent or legal guardian, proof of address, and signature. Library cards must be presented at checkout.
Adults possessing cards and parents/guardian of children possessing cards bear financial responsibility for fines and fees for late, damaged or lost materials. If you allow someone else to use your library card, you are responsible for any fines/fees they incur. When fines reach $10.00, no more materials may be checked out and you cannot use the computer terminals until the balance is entirely paid. A library card replacement costs $2.00.
All materials may be checked out for 3 weeks, except videos which have a loan period of 1 week. Loan periods for Inter-Library Loans (ILL) from outside Berks County vary according to the lending institution. All materials may be renewed once, except "NEW" items and items reserved by other patrons. Renewals on Inter-Library Loans are at the discretion of the lending library. Reserved materials will be held for a week after the patron is notified. Renewals must be initiated by the borrower, either in person, over the phone or through the web-site (www.muhlenbergcommunitylibrary.org).
Returns may be made at any Berks County Public Library location. Many libraries have bookdrops for after-hours returns. Fines are calculated by calendar day up to maximum fines per type of material. Damaged or lost items are charged at replacement value plus a $5.00 processing fee. Fines are 50 cents per day for video and Interlibrary Loans. For all other materials, fines are 10 cents per day.
Patrons with overdue materials will be contacted by computer generated notices, either U.S. mail or e-mail. If the problem is not resolved when a Billing Notice is generated, a collection request will be filed with the Credit Bureau of Reading and Berks County. Charges reported will be the amount on the patron's Billing Notice plus 20% to cover the collection agency fee.
